The primary teaching medium is English which is the language of instruction for English, Mathematics, Science, Art, IT and PE throughout the school. Islamic, Social Studies/Civic and Arabic are delivered in the Arabic language. Class sizes are kept small in recognition of the fact that students are being taught in a second language.
Senior students can follow the Omani Thanawiya qualifications, and/or IGCSE and A level courses . External IGCSE examinations are offered at the end of Grade 10, and AS and A2 in Grades 11 and 12. Courses studied at both IGCSE and A level include English (1st and 2nd language), Arabic, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
ABQ is fully committed to preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s world and endeavours to make best use of new Information Technologies to raise education standards, enhance learning, and equip young people with ICT skills and knowledge they will need to be effective. From KG to Grade 8 ICT is delivered through the Future Kids programme, a world renowned programme with specific MOE endorsement in Oman. In the upper Grades a specialist ICT teacher prepares students for appropriate external examinations. Three fully equipped ICT suites are available, and a full time ICT Supervisor and an assistant ensures all computers and technical equipment functions smoothly at all times.
The curriculum is enriched with the study of Art, Music, and Physical Education.
We carefully monitor the children's progress and ensure that all are set appropriately challenging targets for learning. All students are allocated to a form class. The form teacher gets to know each student well and is the central link in the pastoral care support system of the school. Students also get to mix with children of different ages through the extra activity programme, assemblies, and other special events held during the year.
Supervised field trips to places of interest are organised from time to time throughout the year. ABQIS is an active participant in inter-school events such as Public Speaking contests and Model United Nations conferences.
